In Indiahoma, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses. Should you require hair-based testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in this domain, and our centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped for such assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice. These samples are adept at analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing options.

The trend of employing hair follicle drug tests has notably risen in recent times. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly favor hair testing over conventional urine analyses. Recognized for their stringent drug policies, many employers, judiciary systems, and probation officers use these tests. Their primary appeal is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, ensuring a monitored collection process that's hard to deceive. Yet, for detecting substance use within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When cut near the scalp, hair may offer a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair for optimal screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. The term "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory method of processing a drug test outcome includes four chief phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This stage confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary swift test for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive outcome requires verification to be acknowledged in legal proceedings. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), creating a challenging methodology for hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers usage trends: It can present a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as the color of hair and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
