In Jet, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol assessments, we boast a network of testing centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specific testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has grown over the traditional methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts demand this testing type as opposed to merely a urine analysis. This test suits zero-tolerance policy environments, legal oversight, and probationary conditions. Its prime advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, under supervised collection, which is quite challenging to compromise. Nonetheless, for drug use detection of the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair, it offers a prolonged overview of alcohol and drug use. Collection of hair near the scalp can provide an approximate 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. The process of hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For testing involving EtG, additional add-ons, or panels beyond ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be sourced. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory processing of a drug test result, the four primary steps are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into a laboratory system. It involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary step to check for drug use. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any sample indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging procedure to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
