Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kenton, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing and operates testing centers in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage is a longer period of drug use detection, usually up to 90 days, with a closely monitored collection process, making it hard to deceive. For recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month detection period for substances. The collection process is straightforward, with low susceptibility to tampering, and convenient shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) at the base of the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is advisable. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a sample into the lab's system. This stage ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data not available through an electronic chain of custody system is entered.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It charts a drug usage trajectory over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: There's a 5-7 day period before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
