Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kiefer, Oklahoma. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers available in every city across the country that can conduct these tests. Typically, you need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for analysis. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests suit employers with strict no-drug policies, legal settings, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making them tough to bypass. However, for substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has garnered recognition as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair samples, they are less prone to tampering, and can be conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal volume for screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in processing a drug test outcome in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary swift assessment for drug presence. While it effectively excludes drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening extremely challenging.

Positive screening results are corroborated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug consumption for a period reaching up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological usage data: It offers insights into drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent usage detection: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kiefer, OK, the decision to use hair follicle testing over urine testing is clear. Hair tests surpass urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy. While urine tests may only highlight recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing a history of substance use with more reliability and less chance of deception.

Extended Detection Window

In Kiefer, OK, hair follicle tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, far surpassing other testing methods. This extended period allows employers to gain a detailed understanding of an individual's drug use history, offering insights that are essential for informed decision-making in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
