Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kiowa, Oklahoma. Our specialty is hair drug and alcohol tests, with facilities available across all cities nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances based on your testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has gained popularity over recent years. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are now preferring hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is particularly favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary bodies, and probation services because it offers a longer detection window—up to 90 days. While particularly tough to manipulate, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The process of hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term profile of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When gathered from near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection period for identifying alcohol and drug use. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A standard 1.5-inch sample, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair forms (such as facial hair, underarm hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of a sample's integration into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for illegal substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a confirmed result is essential for legal acceptance. Any samples that initially test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and with accreditation based on ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It can indicate drug use patterns over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become reportable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used; however, the test evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
