Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing solutions throughout Konawa, Oklahoma. Whether you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty in hair assessments is unmatched. With facilities spanning across all cities in the nation, our centers are equipped to conduct reliable hair evaluations. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2-inch hair length from your head or body is necessary for sampling. Our hair analysis can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has seen a rise in preference over the past years for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer these tests over traditional urine methods. Organizations with strict zero-tolerance policies, along with probation officers and courts, use hair drug tests. One advantage is its broad detection window of up to 90 days through an observed procedure, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, when it's crucial to detect consumption within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as an effective method for revealing the usage of drugs and alcohol. The hair possesses a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be acquired. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. It includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any extra data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick initial check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumed positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

For any positive screening results, Confirmation is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus yielding more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It chronicles drug usage patterns over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
