Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Lahoma, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we are specialists in hair testing, offering services through centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for testing. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing protocols.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in assessing drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for this method over standard urine tests. This test is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary situations. Its advantage lies in offering a detection window of approximately 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process that’s nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol usage by embedding markers within its developing strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol usage spanning roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands—comparable to a #2 pencil diameter—yields around 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both preliminary and thorough analysis. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for precise measurement is advisable. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specify scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Summary

The hair drug testing procedure comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating the sample into the laboratory workflow. Tasks include ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary information omitted from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers an initial, efficient assessment for substances. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude substance use in most instances, it necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any Screening samples that appear positive require further verification.

After a Screening stage indication of substance presence, additional hair from the sample is prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Final verification of positive results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Pre-confirmation, positive samples receive washes as needed. The comprehensive lab sequence spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Hair drug test benefits:

  • Extended detection: Capable of revealing drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a more limited timeframe.
  • Test integrity: The reliable nature of hair drug testing makes tampering difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides insights into drug usage trends over extended periods, beyond recent consumption data.

Drawbacks:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color or growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these assessments evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
