Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lenora, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert in hair testing, with facilities across the country, including all cities Nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. An ideal length is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body, which is generally required. Hair analysis can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer specialized hair testing solutions.

Recent advancements have seen hair follicle drug tests become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are turning to hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are advantageous for employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation officers. The standout advantage is a vastly extended detection timeline, typically capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, utilizing an observation-based collection methodology that makes tampering almost impossible. However, for identifying drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests retain their accuracy edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can reveal substance use history stretching back nearly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and including around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding ten, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale is advisable for measuring the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only the hair on the scalp. Body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is composed of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in handling a sample within the laboratory system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. It's an economically efficient way to identify drug use in most cases; however, a positive screening result needs further confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples with a positive screening outcome need a secondary confirmation.

If screening results are positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing particularly challenging to conduct.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive screening are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can find drug use up to 90 days past, unlike urine tests that provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: The accuracy of hair drug tests stems from their resistance to tampering.
  • Offers usage patterns: Hair testing can outline substance usage trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests come at a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
