Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lexington, Oklahoma. When hair drug or alcohol screening is required, we specialize in these evaluations, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, utilizing hair follicle drug assessments in testing has become more commonplace. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts favor hair over traditional urine tests. These screenings are crucial for organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeframe, often covering up to 90 days, collected under observation and difficult to manipulate. For detecting recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a standard pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests that include more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal purposes. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substances for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection time.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, providing more accurate results.
  • Offers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a substantial timeline, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lexington, OK, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests in reliability and detection efficacy. The comprehensive scope of hair testing ensures more accurate identification of substances over extended periods compared to the limited window of urine tests.

The precision of hair testing is invaluable to employers and legal bodies implementing zero-tolerance policies, making it a superior choice to urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window extending up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Lexington, OK, offers employers a broad view of an individual's substance history. This method ensures a thorough understanding of past drug use, aiding in informed employment decisions.

Employers can benefit from the extended timeframe, obtaining a comprehensive assessment of ongoing substance use, which isn't possible with shorter-detection-period testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lexington, OK, hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method that minimizes the risk of sample alteration, ensuring credible results. This reliability ensures authenticity, making it near-impossible for subjects to manipulate the outcome.

Employers and legal authorities favor hair testing for its inherent integrity, which eliminates the challenges associated with sample adulteration often seen in other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
