In Lula, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive analysis of hair follicle samples. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol evaluations, we provide services at numerous centers nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed for testing from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be custom-tailored for various analysis.

Recently, hair follicle tests have risen in popularity for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor these over traditional urine tests. Selected for zero-tolerance policies, they offer detection of drug use up to 90 days, with virtually no chance of tampering. For recent (within 5 days) drug use, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing is utilized to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test in the hair drug testing process includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This procedure encompasses ensuring the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial swift assessment for potential drug usage. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a historical pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
