In Mangum, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle substance testing. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis and offers testing facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a more common method of drug screening. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists are often opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair analyses are preferred by employers enforcing drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation programs. The main advantage is a significantly longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection, making it difficult to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective methodology for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair encapsulate drug and alcohol indicators, serving as a long-term record of such usage. Collected from close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for these substances. The collection process of hair is uncomplicated, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the prime sample quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10-panel assessments, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary assessment for potential drug usage. While Screening effectively eliminates drug presence in most samples, a positive result necessitates additional confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening results indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents significant challenges.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. Every step of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection scope.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug assessment is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides chronological information: It presents a usage pattern over a longer timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detectability of drugs in hair arises 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
