In May, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for the test, allowing detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent years for drug screening, often preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests. With their zero-tolerance drug policies, employers, courts, and probationary individuals find this method beneficial. The primary advantage lies in the test's longer detection window, typically extending up to 90 days, with sample collection being observable and virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant mechanism in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. If gathered near the scalp, it can offer an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (almost the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for evaluation and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test findings involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initiated into a lab's system, ensuring it is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence, serving as a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in most cases. Positive screenings must be confirmed for court acceptance. Presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology.

Positive screening confirmations occur via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and upholding ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays historical usage: It illustrates a drug usage pattern over time, unlike tests for recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in May, OK, trumps traditional urine testing by offering superior accuracy in drug detection. While urine tests only reveal recent usage, hair tests can detect drug use spanning several months, giving a more detailed view.

The increased reliability of hair tests over the conventional urine method is unmistakable. Hair testing minimizes the risk of false negatives, making it a more dependable choice for employers and legal authorities.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing reduces the chance of tampering and produces more consistent results. This consistency is crucial for maintaining robust drug-free workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

In May, OK, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window for drugs, with the ability to trace substances used up to 90 days prior. This is significantly longer than traditional methods such as urine testing.

The prolonged detection period allows employers and legal entities to gain deeper insight into an individual's drug history, offering a holistic view rather than a snapshot.

This method serves as a valuable tool for assessing long-term substance use, enabling organizations to make more informed decisions regarding employment and compliance with policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In May, OK, hair follicle tests offer substantial tamper resistance, making it exceptionally challenging for individuals to alter or cheat the test. This reliability is a significant advantage over other testing methods like urine tests.

With a rigorous collection process, hair follicle testing ensures the integrity of the sample remains intact from collection to analysis, providing peace of mind to those relying on the results.

This tamper-proof nature of hair testing not only reinforces trust in the results but also deters individuals from attempting to bypass the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
