Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in McCord, Oklahoma. Should you require such a service, our specialties lie in hair analysis, and we've established facilities across cities nationwide that can execute this test. For the procedure, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle analysis. Multiple employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair testing instead of the traditional urine analysis. Entities with zero-tolerance stances, judicial bodies, and probation officers are frequent users. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection window, generally reaching up to 90 days, the mandatory supervised collection, and the resistance to falsification, though urine tests remain more precise for the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance exposure. When taken close to the scalp, hair can supply an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it can be easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair threads (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The process in a lab for analyzing a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This process ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Every sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening needs further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and curated for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are extremely difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They can display a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual factors like hair color and growth rate can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In McCord, OK, hair follicle testing is viewed as more effective compared to traditional urine tests. Detection accuracy is a significant advantage, providing more reliable outcomes. Hair tests offer a superior detection window, up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which may miss longer-term substance use.

Reliability and accuracy distinguish hair tests from urine tests, as they are less susceptible to tampering, ensuring trust in results.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of up to 90 days makes hair follicle testing in McCord, OK, an indispensable tool for employers. It detects drug use over a more extended period, unlike traditional tests, providing a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance habits.

This longer detection period helps employers make informed decisions by offering a transparent assessment of an employee's or applicant's substance use history, beyond just recent use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
