Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Meno, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment via hair analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Over recent years, the approach to drug testing has seen an increased shift towards hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair analysis over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage of this method is a longer detection window for substances, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to alter. For recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can supply a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result primarily involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample in a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was sealed and sent properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is selected from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more brief detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can display a pattern of drug use over a timeline, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
