Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Milburn, Oklahoma. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our network includes centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a common preference for conducting drug assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse now favor hair testing over the typical urine test. Hair follicle assessments benefit employers with strict drug policies, the courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection period - up to 90 days. They involve observable sample collection, minimizing cheating, while urine tests remain more reliable for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick scan for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in a majority of cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered a more complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably more challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can indicate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
