Providing thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Mill Creek, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. We have centers in all cities across the Nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle tests have become a popular choice for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often opt for hair tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is ideal for companies with strict no-drug policies, for judicial use, or individuals on parole. The test's main advantage is a longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process, making deceit almost impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent substance use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a three-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is also recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term ‘head hair’ specifically denotes scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ refers to all other types of hair (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data inputs not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial expedient check for abusive drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be valid in a legal context. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in Screening, more hair from the original sample is retrieved and prepped for Extraction. During the Extraction process, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those in other testing methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is one reason hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It takes a period of approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
