Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Moffett, Oklahoma. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this testing method, and offers testing centers nationwide that are equipped to conduct hair tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair over standard urine tests. This alternative is often selected by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. The leading advantage of hair follicle tests is their elongated detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, utilizes an observed sample collection, and is highly resistant to tampering. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the superior option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair tests can offer up to a 90-day timeframe for detecting substance use. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it ships easily.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil), provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing. For Extended Testing (EtG), additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent body hair sample can be used. The term "head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any information not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a rapid initial check for substances. While it is cost-efficient for eliminating the presence of substances in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples from Screening will need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial collection for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than seen in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a complex method.

Confirmation for any positive results from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers insight into substance use patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks near-term detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth can impact the concentration of drug indicators in the hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
