Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing in Mooreland, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screen, we specialize in hair assessments, with testing sites in cities nationwide ready to manage a hair examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug screening. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Employers holding strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probation individuals use these tests. The main advantage is its extended detection time, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is difficult to manipulate. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine assessments remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective measure for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken from the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be upheld in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Tough to cheat: It's quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a drug use trend over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
