Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Nashoba, Oklahoma. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair analysis makes us your go-to choice, with facilities available in cities nationwide to handle these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, ideally from the crown, is necessary; alternatively, body hair can also be used. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug analysis has become a prevalent method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair over urine tests due to its superior advantages. Hair follicle tests are crucial for zero-tolerance employment, court-directed assessments, and probation monitoring. The key advantage is its prolonged detection period, typically up to 90 days, observed in a supervised setting, minimizing cheating. However, recent drug use within the past five days may be better identified with a urine test.

What it is, How it works

The method of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures biomarkers in its growing fibers, offering an extended timeline for alcohol and drug detection. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal usage over a period of roughly three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches long with around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For the purposes of EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, the same amount of body hair may be taken. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage includes a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that test as presumptively positive in Screening will require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

To confirm any positive result in Screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under regulations set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a much shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over an extended period, rather than recent use only.

Weaknesses:

  • Not effective for recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color or individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Keep in mind: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
