Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing in Newkirk, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise is hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are collected. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing instead of the common urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often rely on hair testing. A major advantage of a hair test is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, its supervised collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are preferable for detecting very recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, it can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-resistant, and it can be shipped easily.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to weigh the hair. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key processes in lab testing for drug results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes preparing a sample for the lab's system, which involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. As a cost-efficient semi-analysis to detect the majority of drug involvement, any positive result through Screening must be validated for court admissibility. Samples with potential positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples showing potential positives during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original batch for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at more trace levels than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed to confirm any positive Screening results. Necessary cleansing of all samples presumed positive occurs before confirmation. The full process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is closely examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests remain viable to reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair test is highly challenging, thereby increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can reveal a history of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense factor: Hair drug tests often cost more compared to other testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug residues in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand and not the underlying scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
