In Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide that perform these tests. Hair from the crown or body, typically between 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. It is favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer it. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days and its secure, observed collection process. While effective, it's less suitable for detecting drugs used within the last 5 days, where urine tests are preferred.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When hair samples are obtained near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol presence for approximately a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch piece of about 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield approximately 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for measuring. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The main stages in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the lab's database. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a rapid preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug use in numerous samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive samples in Screening proceed to secondary verification.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. This stage involves reducing drug concentration levels from hair more significantly than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive Screening results. All positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Even though termed 'hair follicle tests', the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
