Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ninnekah, Oklahoma. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is equipped with expertise in hair testing and maintains testing facilities across all cities in the U.S. Individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body for testing. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Such testing is mandated by numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine testing. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services. The primary advantage includes a prolonged detection period for drugs, generally up to 90 days, gathered in a monitored process and challenging to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. The hair stores a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can yield up to an approximate 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately tamper-resistant, and simple to dispatch.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We're in favor of using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In situations where scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair is explicitly connected to scalp hair solely. Body hair denotes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This procedure entails ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial expedited examination for substantive misuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding substance use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show tentative positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug assessments can perceive drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Reveals past data: This test delivers a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than just recent use.

Shortcomings:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
