Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Norge, Oklahoma. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Testing may cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

Hair follicle tests have become a popular method for drug screening over recent years. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for this test over traditional urine methods. It suits zero-tolerance policies and is favored by legal systems and probation officers. The key advantage is its extended drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days and virtually tamper-proof collection process, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is becoming recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by fixing biomarkers within the structure of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. It’s straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising approximately 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or testing beyond ten panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest verifying the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, the equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. “Head hair” refers specifically to scalp hair only, whereas “body hair” encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies whether the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical means to determine drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be suitable for court. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. During this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows.
  • Minimal chance of tampering: Altering a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variations such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair shaft instead of the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
