Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Alfalfa, Oklahoma. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our experts specialize in this method with facilities available in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. Tested hair samples can assess drug and alcohol/ETG presence or choices tailored to other needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prominence in drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict policies against substance use, legal bodies, and individuals under probation. This method's main advantage is its ability to reveal up to 90 days of drug use, offering an observed collection process that's difficult to tamper with. However, for drug detection within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now esteemed as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended history of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair. When procured near the scalp, hair delivers an approximately 3-month span for detecting alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. Reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair, while body hair signifies any other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, confirming it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial, brisk evaluation for drugs. This cost-efficient approach eliminates drug usage for most samples, but a positive screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that screen positive presumptively require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted for the Extraction process. In this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It demonstrates a use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as “hair follicle tests,” the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
