Located in North Enid, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening. Whether seeking tests for drugs or alcohol, our facilities provide specialized hair testing nationwide. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches near the crown or elsewhere is suitable. Such tests can identify substances, including ETG alcohol, and offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle assays have increasingly complemented traditional drug screenings. Both employers with strict no-drug policies and judicial systems favor hair samples over urine tests. The primary advantage lies in hair tests' ability to reveal substance use over a 90-day span, making it very difficult to falsify results. However, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair records a prolonged history of drugs and alcohol by encasing biological markers within the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments surpassing ten panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair might be gathered. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The primary stages in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory database. This entails confirming the proper sealing and transport of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data recording not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift assessment for substance misuse. While it is an economical approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug analysis is extremely challenging, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical pattern: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over the duration, rather than only recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Detectable drug traces in hair appear only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier compared to other drug-testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Caution: While calls it "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
