Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in North Garfield, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available in all cities nationwide to administer a hair evaluation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. These evaluations assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug evaluation methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug evaluations over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are implemented by employers with zero-drug tolerance stances, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its extensive detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust solution for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for substances, trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other drug use within a time frame of up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section from around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal volume for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It's advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. The term head hair here denotes scalp hair solely. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of the sample within a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Despite Screening being a more budget-friendly option to eliminate drug usage among the majority of samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation for it to be accepted in judicial proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening do require further verification.

Should a sample return presumptively positive at the Screening phase, a greater amount of hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are derived from hair at a concentration significantly lower than that in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug usage spanning up to 90 days, in contrast with urine assessments which offer a more limited detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug assessments pose significant difficulty for falsification, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days post-consumption to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are commonly pricier compared to other drug assessment techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
