Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services across Northeast Comanche, Oklahoma. For those in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our centers, located nationwide, are equipped to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body will suffice. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing requirements.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has become more commonplace. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair over urine tests for accuracy. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, thanks to their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days and resistant to tampering. However, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests still reign as the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample weight for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, and others).

Process Outline

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the processing of the sample within the lab's system. It entails ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening performs a preliminary test for commonly abused drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive outcome requires confirmation for court validity. Samples that test as presumptively positive in the Screening phase require further confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are detected at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), distinguishing hair screening as a challenging approach.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for nearly 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to compromise, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, not only recent use.

Challenges:

  • Lacks recent detection: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the subscalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Northeast Comanche, OK, when comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests, the advantages become apparent. Hair tests present superior detection accuracy over an extended timeframe, making it difficult to evade detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
