Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing to Northwest Osage, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, this company excels in hair testing and boasts facilities across the country that can conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the head or body, suffices. These hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

In more recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse often opt for hair tests over typical urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. The most significant advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use. The hair retains a prolonged trace of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection window extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A proximal hair sample measuring 1.5 inches (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from approximately 200 strands will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process is composed of four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample’s secure sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry omitted by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial drug abuse assessment. While it's an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, any positive screen mandates Confirmation to be legally admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at relatively lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the intricacy of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirming any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are highly tamper-resistant, increasing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It depicts a usage pattern over time, rather than merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
