In Oakhurst, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing sites throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for testing. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug screening has become a preferred method over traditional urine tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance programs now favor hair testing. Employers enforcing no-drug-use policies, as well as courts and probation officers, utilize these tests. Hair testing's key advantage is detecting drug use over a span of up to 90 days, with observed collection minimizing the chance of tampering. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still excel.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol intake. The hair retains a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial process of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to cheating: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents past data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a distinct edge over urine tests in Oakhurst, OK. Its superior detection accuracy ensures that even infrequent substance use is identified.
This method provides more reliable results, reducing the risk of false negatives often associated with urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
