Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Piedmont, Oklahoma. If you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialists in hair testing operate throughout the nation, providing services in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug testing, preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. These tests aid zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation requirements due to their extended detection window, up to 90 days, and are collected under observation to prevent tampering. For recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the growing strands, hair offers a detailed account of alcohol and drug habits over time. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal up to a three-month period of alcohol and drug use. The collection process for hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately equivalent to 200 hair strands (or the diameter of a #2 pencil), is required to yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample mass for testing and verification. For EtG testing, add-ons, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen accurately. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to hair from the scalp, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are entered into a lab’s database, checking for correct sealing and handling, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry unless an electronic chain of custody is used.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, positive Screening results must be substantiated to uphold legal standards. Presumptive positives identified during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For specimens returning a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, the drug levels in hair are isolated at much lower concentrations compared to other tests (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair testing a complex method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm positive Screening findings. Presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover shorter timespans.
  • Resistance to falsification: Hair drug testing is challenging to manipulate, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It tracks drug consumption patterns over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," these assessments examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Piedmont, OK, offering superior detection accuracy. While urine tests might detect recent substance use, hair testing provides a more reliable long-term perspective. Employers benefit from this extended window, often opting for hair testing to enforce zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
