Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Preston, Oklahoma. Need a hair drug or alcohol evaluation? Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair examinations, with locations across cities nationwide capable of executing such assessments. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is generally required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug analysis has become more common in conducting drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often request hair tests over the standard urine ones. Employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair analysis. This method's primary advantage is its extensive drug detection period, typically up to 90 days, plus being a nearly tamper-proof collection method. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair locks in biomarkers within the strands as they grow, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances. Captured near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug consumption with a detection span of up to approximately three months. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for testing and verifying. For EtG, additional substances, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result consist of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample's seal and shipment integrity, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening carries out an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive findings require verification to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with potential positives during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample indicates potential positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most complex methods.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with suspected positivity are cleansed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It normally takes 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the evaluation examines the hair shaft and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
