In Pryor Creek, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. For those needing a drug or alcohol assessment via hair, we specialize in these tests and have numerous centers Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair or body hair may be used. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common procedure. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. The main advantage of hair drug tests is the extended drug-use detection period of up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making them hard to tamper with. However, for identifying recent drug use within approximately 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding strand. When acquired near the scalp, this method can offer a detection timeframe of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG assessments, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. In terms of head hair, this denotes scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the lab’s framework. This step verifies appropriate sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening functions as a preliminary and rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While it is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive Screening needs confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples positively indicated in Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screenings.

The Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, as opposed to indicating only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
