Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive suite of hair follicle drug testing services right in Ringwood, Oklahoma. If your requirement involves hair drug or alcohol testing, trust that our specialization is hair testing. With centers located in all cities across the nation, we are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body hair suffices. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing options.

In the past few years, the trend in drug testing has significantly shifted towards the hair follicle drug test. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are selected by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection duration—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making them nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within a 5-day window, the urine test remains the top contender for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. A strand taken near the scalp can indicate alcohol or drug use for up to about 90 days. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, approximately 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg, which is optimal for both initial tests and confirmations. For expanded panels such as EtG or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the preliminary intake of samples into a lab's system. This stage verifies that samples are sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any extra data not provided by an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs an initial, fast assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive requires confirmation to be legally valid. All Screening presumptive positives must undergo secondary verification.

When Screening returns a presumptive positive, extra hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation when necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheat-resistant: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to manipulation, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: Provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variabilities like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the testing actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
