Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Rock Island, Oklahoma. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol tests, our centers specialize in these services and are available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for effective testing. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are opting for these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular among employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the court systems, and probationary individuals. A significant advantage is its ability to uncover drug use over approximately 90 days, through supervised sample collection, making it nearly infallible. For recent drug use, particularly within five days, urine tests still reign as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a chronological record of substance intake by embedding chemical markers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount from the body can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair strictly. Body hair covers all other types, such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Reveals historical use: It can offer an account of drug consumption over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
