Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Rocky Mountain, Oklahoma. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair tests and offer facilities nationwide to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, drug tests have increasingly incorporated hair follicle methods. Hair tests are preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and parolees often rely on them. They offer detection up to 90 days, observed collection, and are hard to tamper with. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an efficacious method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate long-lasting indicators of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, the hair can present up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome includes four fundamental phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug screening is among the most rigorous methodologies.

To confirm any positive screening result, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Low potential for evasion: It's highly challenging to evade a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers a retrospective data overview: It can illustrate a pattern of substance usage over a prolonged duration, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent usage detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and unique growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Important: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
