Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Roff, Oklahoma. Whether you're seeking a hair-based substance or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities spread across all cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is sufficient. These assessments can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

In recent times, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle tests for substance detection. More employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair testing over urine alternatives. This preference is due to hair tests being favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal entities, and probation programs. Hair tests offer an extended detection span, up to 90 days, ensuring reliability as they are collected under observation, making them hard to fake. However, for recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent technique, hair testing is utilized for identifying the usage of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a long-term trace of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jewelry scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifies only scalp hair, while body hair covers all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. It includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, providing it with an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a swift initial check for abuse drugs. While being cost-effective for negating drug use on most samples, a positive screening result needs confirmation for admissibility in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug tests the most challenging methodology to perform.

The Confirmation process for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's extremely tough to manipulate a hair drug test, thus increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: Presents a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other screening methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair hue and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
