Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services across Southeast Washita, Oklahoma. For individuals needing hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair analysis extends to our numerous nationwide facilities, where testing is conducted. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can be tailored to identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific preferences.

The implementation of hair follicle drug assessments has increasingly become popular in recent times. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer these over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support strict no-drug policies, benefiting workplaces, legal courts, and probation situations. A key advantage is the ability to detect drug usage over an extended 90-day period, done via a supervised collection process, reducing tampering possibilities. For identifying recent drug use (within five days), urine testing remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital method for spotting substance and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged history of these by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Hair, when sampled near the scalp, can potentially reveal up to around a 3-month span of alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For testing beyond 10 panels, EtG, or additional tests, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial process of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes assuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary swift assessment for substance misuse. Although a cost-effective approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally accepted. Samples yielding presumptive positive findings in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Limited scope for deception: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: Offers an overview of drug usage trends over a period, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
