Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Southwest Comanche, Oklahoma. Those requiring drug or alcohol tests in hair form can rely on our nationwide network of test centers to meet their needs. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Courts, employers, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests cater to organizations with zero-tolerance policies and those monitoring individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is a detection window reaching up to 90 days. Though comprehensive, urine tests are still the most precise method for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair shaft's fibers as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reflect alcohol and drug use over roughly a 90-day period. It is easy to obtain, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for conducting both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or extensive tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We advise the use of a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four key phases are involved in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a specimen into the lab's system. This process ensures that the specimen was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive findings need to be validated to hold up legally. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a more minute concentration than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a much shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to subvert, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers longitudinal insights: It can illustrate a trend of substance use over an extended duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Detectability in hair necessitates approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as natural hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
