Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Sweetwater, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this service and operates centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to perform it. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is needed. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. This method's chief advantage is its extended detection period, typically reaching up to 90 days, in an observed setting, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When cut closely from the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and drug presence. Hair is effortless to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid initial assessment for drug use. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug consumption on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate another confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than with other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Verification of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumed positive are washed preceding confirmation when required. The entirety of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in compliance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle inside the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
