Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Tabler, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our centers specialize in such tests across all major U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or meet other specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a go-to method for drug testing. Many companies, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this method over urine testing. Organizations upholding zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationary programs often use hair tests, which reveal drug usage over a longer duration, typically 90 days. Despite this advantage, urine tests still top the list for screening recent use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for substances. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for substance abuse. This cost-effective method is useful to initially dismiss drug usage in most samples; however, a positive result at this stage must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive after the Screening phase, additional hair is prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Drug use can be identified for up to 90 days with hair drug tests, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test is often called "hair follicle tests", but it focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outweigh urine testing in Tabler, OK?
Superior Detection Capability: Hair tests provide extended detection windows, diagnosing substance use more reliably than traditional urine tests. This makes hair follicle testing a chosen method for employers determined to maintain workplace integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
