In Taft, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair-based testing for drugs and alcohol, their centers are available nationwide. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is required, although body hair is an alternative. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular choice for drug screening over traditional methods such as urine tests. This preference is found among employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts due to the extended detection period—up to 90 days. Hair tests are nearly foolproof, with observation during sample collection, making it tough to manipulate. Despite this, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the go-to choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This involves embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate three-month period of detection for both alcohol and various drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

To obtain an adequate 100mg hair sample for analysis and verification, a 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs, akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil, is required from the scalp. For tests such as EtG or over 10-panel screens, 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hairs are unavailable, equivalent quantities of body hair can be collected. The term 'head hair' is strictly related to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory sequence for assessing a drug test result primarily includes four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to entering a sample into a lab's protocol, ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out supplementary data not captured by an electronic custody chain.

Screening denotes a preliminary, swift assessment for detecting substance abuse. Though Screening provides an economically efficient means to negate drug use across most samples, court admission necessitates confirming any positive results. Samples presuming positivity in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drug isolation from hair occurs at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the increased complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to necessary confirmations. The entire lab procedure, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation consonant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analysis can identify substance use over a period extending to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timelines associated with urine tests.
  • Immunized against tampering: The test's design makes it exceedingly difficult to manipulate, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Provision of usage history: It offers insight into patterns of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks capacity for recent use detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days post-use for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analysis incurs greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair may vary based on factors like hair color and unique growth rates.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the process actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
