Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Talala, OK. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing prides itself in hair analysis with facilities nationwide equipped for such tests. Generally, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for analysis. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for drug analysis. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair screenings over traditional urine tests. Such tests serve employers with stringent drug-free policies, legal entities, and probationers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its prolonged detection window of drug use, lasting up to 90 days. The collection process is observed, and tampering is nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal about a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, its tampering is relatively challenging, and it is convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. The weighing of the sample on a jeweler's scale is advised. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a laboratory's system. The procedure verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any necessary additional data entry is completed that was not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be suitable for legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and is prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair analysis is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed ahead of confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation by ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can determine drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a briefer detection window.
  • Low probability of manipulation: Manually tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, rendering the outcomes more dependable.
  • Yields historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern spanning a longer timeframe, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in the hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses compared to alternative testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
