Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Twin Oaks, Oklahoma. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers accessible nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required for testing. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often request hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are vital for employers with strict drug-free policies, court mandates, and probation scenarios. Hair follicle tests boast a detection window up to 90 days, involve observed sample collection, and are resistant to tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. This method provides an extended history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. Collected close to the scalp, hair reveals a window of detection of up to three months for substances. It is straightforward to obtain, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hairs, the size of a #2 pencil, yields around 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair might be utilized. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair whereas "Body hair" encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome follows four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts by integrating a sample into a lab system. This phase confirms the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data that may not be included in an electronic chain of custody format.

Screening offers an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug presence in most samples, any positive screens require confirmation to be recognized in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, hair is further extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower levels than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to necessary confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Supplies historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other substance testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
