Located in Vera, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full suite of hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for both drugs and alcohol, we boast a network of testing centers across the nation, ready to perform hair tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair tests can be customized for drug analysis, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over traditional methods. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals increasingly favor hair drug tests due to their reliability over urine tests. These tests are trusted by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and for monitoring probation compliance. The standout advantage of hair tests is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, while urine tests remain optimal for recent use in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month period of drug and alcohol use. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel assessments, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be taken. Scalp hair specifically denotes hair from the head, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab's workflow. This consists of confirming the proper seal and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial quick analysis for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid for legal matters. Any samples with presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are thoroughly washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect over shorter periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical usage data: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
