Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Verdigris, Oklahoma. Whether your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers in all U.S. cities available for these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has seen an increased emphasis on hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists are turning to hair drug tests rather than standard urine tests. These tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. Hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window of up to 90 days, involves an observed collection method, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. However, for drug usage within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now seen as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in their growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of nearly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of preparing a drug test outcome in the lab involves four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially organizing a sample into a lab system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening consists of an initial, swift check for drugs of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug usage in most samples, but a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the hardest method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenges in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more authentic outcomes.
  • Tracking historical data: It can document drug use trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
