In Wainwright, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our focus on hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the nation ready to conduct this test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair testing allows analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. For organizations with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation, hair tests provide a key advantage of detecting usage for up to 90 days, making cheating almost impossible. However, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, the hair offers an approximately three-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, sufficient for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150 mg of the hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Four primary steps define the laboratory procedure for processing drug tests: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial assessment for potential drug use. While it serves as an economic means to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples indicating positive results in Screening must undergo further validation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive results post-screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete testing process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug testing poses a significant challenge for manipulation, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Exhibits patterns of substance use over time, rather than identifying only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: The expense of hair tests generally exceeds that of other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: The concentration of drug markers in hair may be influenced by factors like hair color and growth rate variances.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
