Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Watova, Oklahoma. Those needing hair drug or alcohol evaluation can rely on Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair analysis. We have centers nationwide including all cities, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have increasingly become a preferred method. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair testing over standard urine checks. Hair follicle examinations are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. They offer the advantage of a substantially longer detection window, up to 90 days, with monitored sample collection, making them highly secure. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair Drug Testing Information

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, providing a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, equivalent body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair explicitly means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. It's a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use on most samples. However, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be court admissible. Presumptively positive Screening samples necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides drug use patterns over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
