Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle assessments in Wauhillau, Oklahoma. Whether you're testing for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis with centers across the nation ready to assist. Most cases use 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored solutions.

The shift to hair follicle assessments has been noticeable in recent years, with the method gaining favor over traditional urine tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for this test. The key advantage lies in its longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that ensures accuracy. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it develops. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal usage for up to a 3-month period for alcohol and other substances. Its collection is straightforward, it’s somewhat resistant to tampering, and it's easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is prepared from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect for a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
