Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Welch, Oklahoma. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as well as by courts and probation services. These tests are beneficial for their longer detection window of up to 90 days, requiring a monitored collection, making them hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term data by embedding biomarkers within the strands that grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for testing and confirmation. For tests like EtG or those surpassing ten panels, it's advisable to have 150mg. Measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four core stages in processing a lab drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's initial entry into the lab's inventory. This step ensures the sample's seal was intact and it was sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers an economical way to exclude drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Samples identified as possibly positive during Screening require another level of confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This is when drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other procedures (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge in execution.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screenings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical patterns: It captures a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
