Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Texas, Oklahoma. Whether a drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair examination, with centers available nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair analysis over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often use hair follicle tests. The key advantage is its ability to trace drug use up to 90 days, through a strictly monitored process that is nearly fraud-proof. Nonetheless, for detection of drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection window for substances. Its collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides a 100mg hair sample, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers to scalp hair alone, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating a sample into the lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. All presumptive positives in Screening need a further verification step.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This step removes drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites detected.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing Hair and Urine Tests highlights the advantages of hair testing in West Texas, OK. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing excels in detection accuracy, offering a superior analysis for various substances over an extended period.

Urine tests, while effective for short-term analysis, do not compare to the longevity and reliability of hair tests. This difference provides organizations a strategic advantage in upholding zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Broad Detection Window is a standout feature of hair follicle testing in West Texas, OK. These tests can detect substances used up to 90 days prior, offering employers a comprehensive perspective on an individual's substance history.

This extensive time frame for detection is invaluable for organizations aiming to maintain high standards of safety and integrity, providing a complete insight into an applicant’s past behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Reduction of Tampering Risks is a noteworthy advantage of hair follicle tests in West Texas, OK. This testing method significantly minimizes the possibility of sample adulteration, ensuring superior validity of outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
